We had the pleasure of meeting Karen Morrison today. She is a counselor at Rosinante High School .   We learned about the amazing ways in which they are using books to help students overcome issues in their lives as wall as learning tolerance for others.   We were given a great list of books that cover sometimes controversial or live altering concepts, some of which the students in the book club at Rosinante High School have read and discussed.   I think that it is great, that teens are being exposed to literature and topics relevant to their lives, and in this process making connections and opening doors for communication with each other as well as teachers and counselors who they fell they can be open with and rely on.   I applaud Karen for the work that she does and the effort and conviction she puts into helping students succeed.  I am sure that she is a great role model and means for change in the lives of students who need someone to believe in them.

Today we were introduced to Connie Gotsch, a woman of many talents. We had a stimulating lesson on the Hero's Journey, the style of writing she used to write her recently published novel Belle's Star. Connie was very knowledgeable as she helped us to discern the aspects of a hero's journey in well known children's stories, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and Jack and the Beanstalk. I really enjoyed our time with Connie, and am looking forward to reading her book and discovering the heroic journey that leads Belle to a new life. Thank you to Connie Gotsch for your time and knowledge. You are a wonderful role model for women everywhere.

Today Brittany Litke came to class ,and discussed manga and how it has been a part of her life since childhood. I thought it was great that she was able to find something that she enjoyed reading, even if it wasn't what others thought was the best or most appropriate.  I liked her grandmothers motto, that is doesn't matter what you are reading as long as you are reading. I found it fascinating, how reading manga has expanded her interests to the Japanese language and culture. I hope that Brittany gets the opportunity to travel to Japan some day and experience their life and culture first hand.  Brittany also goes to show, that there are many avenues, or genres, a child can try, on their journey to learning and enjoying to read.
